Pontoon Beach was a repeater station on a K-carrier route. K-carrier was a system for transmitting twelve two-way voice circuits on two twisted pairs of copper wires in a cable, using frequency-division multiplexing. Repeaters were installed approximately every 17 miles to amplify the signal.
K-carrier technology is no longer used, and the route and station are not in service.
